About This Project
In 2003, Loudoun and Arlington Counties received a federal grant from the Sustainable Agriculture Research and Education (SARE)
program to explore the potential to develop a niche market for small farmers serving the
Arlington County area. Three farms (Redbud, Red Rake, and Wheatland farms)
participated in this project and brought specialty produce to the Arlington Courthouse
and Columbia Pike markets regularly. To help raise awareness, a web site was
developed to familiarize local residents with the specialty produce and to inform
them of its availability at nearby farmers' markets. This was part of a larger
outreach effort, which included cooking demos, distributing flyers, writing
articles for local newspapers and neighborhood newsletters, and offering
promotional coupons.
