Arlington Farmers' Market

Atwater Breads
Ned Atwater
529 E. Belvedere Avenue
Baltimore, MD 21212
410-323-2396

The Arlington Farmers' Market patrons are fortunate to have Ned Atwater, owner and baker of Atwater Breads, selling his naturally leavened, all organic, hand shaped, hearth baked breads every Saturday. His breads contain no fat, no sugar, no preservatives, and no dairy products, and most breads offered are sourdough based. Of particular interest to those allergic to wheat or intolerant to gluten, the great news is that Ned offers spelt bread. In addition, different types of focaccia are available weekly (the toppings change based on the season and what is available from the market that week). Perhaps you're in the mood for scones, cookies, or sweeter breads? Well, then, Atwater Breads will not disappoint! Each week, different varieties of all of these sweet treats are offered. Typically, Ned uses produce from the market to make, for example, zucchini bread in the summer, cranberry bread in the fall, and eggplant and zucchini focaccia in the summer, just to name a few.
Based out of Baltimore, Ned sells his breads at farmers' markets and restaurants throughout the area. This is Atwater Breads' second year at the Market, and they plan on participating in the winter market as well. Ned and his staff relish the sense of community at the Arlington Farmers' Market, and welcome customers' recommendations and feedback on their baked goods. Katie Atwater, Ned's niece, and her mother, Carolyn, usually oversee bread sales at the Market. What is available for sale changes weekly, but usually Ned will offer 10 different breads, and a selection of scones, focaccia and specialty breads.
Baked goods leftover from the Market are always given to a homeless shelter. Be sure to pay a visit to the Atwater Breads stand the next time you're at the Market--you can not beat the freshness and tastiness of their baked goods!

Gardener's Gourmet, Inc.
Cinda Sebastian & Scott Williams
410-876-7940
ask for salesperson Julie Bolster or Vice-president Cinda Sebastian
3201 Uniontown Rd.
Westminster, MD 21158

Scott Williams and Cinda Sebastian started farming in 1979 by growing vegetables in their small garden and selling them roadside. Since then they have expanded to 40 acres as well as 7000 square feet of greenhouse space. They currently market produce in Baltimore, Washington, Virginia, and have established a restaurant route in Baltimore City.
Gardener's Gourmet, Inc. specializes in high-quality, ultra-fresh vegetables and herbs. They lean toward the unusual, gourmet, baby, European, and heirloom varieties. Scott and Cinda grow food with a minimum of pesticides - using certified-organic seed whenever available - and employing bay-friendly farming practices.
Federal easement land conservation programs that prohibit all development protect their farm. These programs are essential to reducing urban sprawl and preserving farmland. The partnership between farmers and restaurants can have a big impact on local sustainable food production and the results are all good: chefs get the freshest and most diversified food choices at competitive prices; farmers are able to improve their economy with a minimum of shipping and handling. Local buying uses less fossil fuels than anonymously flown in processed foods and support the farmers' intrinsically valuable work.
Scott and Cinda are not in business just to be in business; they are in business because they like to grow things. They are also easily inspired to grow new and different edibles although climate or time and labor limits some requests. Projects on the back burner include wasabi, fiddlehead fern, and raspberries.

Liles Honey
Bennie Liles
2451 S. Culpepper Street
Arlington, VA 22206

Bennie grew up on a farm and has lived in the Arlington area for years. In 1970, Bennie began to pursue beekeeping as a hobby. At one point, he was overseeing over 65 hives, but he has since scaled back to the 15 - 20 hives that he presently maintains. Since 1984, he has housed his bees on Potomac Vegetable Farm and on Wyatt Farm in Wheatland, Virginia. Naturally, Bennie's bees pollinate the fruits, vegetables, and flowers on these farms.
Spring is one of the busiest seasons in the beekeeping industry. After surviving the winter congregated together in large groups, the bees become more active. The bees are readied for the "honey flow" season, fed (sugar water), and at times moved. In this area, Tulip Poplar and Locust Tree flowers provide the main source of nectar for the bees. A stretch of dry, warm weather while these trees are blossoming is essential for good honey production. Honey will flow the months of May and June, and will be harvested by late June. Arlington Farmers' Market patrons have been fortunate to have had Bennie participating in the market since 1984, and he also serves as assistant market manager to Farmer Francis Roland.

Potomac Vegetable Farms was founded by the Newcomb family back in the 1960s. We started out farming the Vienna location here on Route 7, four miles west of Tyson's Corner. In the 1970s, we bought a farm in Purcellville, Virginia, where we grow a wide range of vegetables, including tomatoes, carrots and green beans. Ellen Polishuk manages the Purcellville farm, while Mariette Hiu Newcomb and Hana Newcomb continue to run the Vienna farm. All 50 acres in Loudoun and 10 acres in Vienna have been certified organic, and over the years we've greatly expanded the list of crops we grow. PVF has come a long way since the 1960s, but the original idea hasn't changed a bit. All along we have been committed to growing good food and being good neighbors by providing educational opportunities for adults and children. We hire college students to work during the summer, and during the fall, we provide school tours, hayrides, pumpkins, cider pressing and other fun events for local school children. Hours/Seasons of Operation: Our on-farm season extends from July to October. During July, August and September, Potomac Vegetable Farms is closed on Monday. In October, we're open from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., seven days a week. We sell at the Arlington Farmers’ Market and many others in the area.

Red Rake Farm incorporated in 1996 and has been certified organic since 1999. They are a full spectrum farm growing many varieties of fruits, vegetables (Apples to Zucchini), herbs, edible flowers, cut flowers and a line of gourmet pet products.

Easy to find, they are just 10-miles east of King's Dominion (Exit 98) on Route 30, in King William County. Situated on 107 acres of land in the town of Mangohick, Virginia, Red Rake Farm is a certified organic farm. Proprietors Peter Perkins and Linda Wickenheiser lived in the Arlington area for many years before purchasing the farm, and they now relish the opportunity to sell at what Peter considers one of the "crown jewels" of markets in the area. The farm is comprised of a 300 tree orchard, asparagus beds, grape arbors, plots of seasonal vegetables, raspberry and blackberry patches, and young nut trees. During peak season, as many as ten people may be working to harvest the fruits and vegetables that Market patrons enjoy.
For Red Rake Farm the season starts with potted herbs and beddings plants and ends in the late Fall with holiday gift items, all farm related and produced on the farm.
Special requests are very welcome! Red Rake Farm attends several other farmers' markets in Northern Virginia, too. Unfortunately, they do not have email but you can reach Peter and Linda at 1-804-994-2408 anytime. Both of them look forward to seeing you at the Arlington Farmers' Market!

Francis Roland has been selling fresh produce and flowers at the Arlington Farmers' Market since its opening. As a fifth generation farmer, Francis continues to work the original family farmland. Roland Farms, located in Friendly, Maryland within Prince Georges County, consists of about twenty acres of growing fields. In addition, four greenhouses containing stock plants as well as seedlings are operated year-round. Perhaps one of the most appealing things about farming for Francis is the variety of tasks it offers, whether it be planting seeds, transplanting plants, or gathering vegetables.
Francis has always loved growing things and finds it especially rewarding when customers compliment him on produce purchased from his stand. In fact, Francis considers these compliments part of the "pay" for his efforts. In an effort to please patrons as well as to offer himself a challenge, Francis is always looking for new and improved varieties of produce to grow. Francis also serves as the Arlington Farmers' Market Manager.

Located in Oak Grove, Virginia, the Farm was founded in 1983 when Chuck and Anne Geyer began managing the transformation of the riverside site into a farm for the Voorhees family. The farm, specializing in the production of berries and fruit, is a historic property dating back to 1641.
In addition to attending markets throughout the area, the farm also offers a "pick your own" berries operation. They offer freshly picked farm produce as well as farm made preserves at their on site farm market. Visitors to the farm are encouraged to explore the trails of the Voorhees Nature Preserve, a large parcel of land that the Voorhees donated to The Nature Conservancy in 1995.
Passing by the stand these days, it's hard not to notice the tables of wonderfully aromatic strawberries and buckets of tall asparagus spears that the farm is offering for sale. What can Market patrons expect later in the season? According to Bob Jochum who sells at the market, plenty of raspberries, blackberries, blueberries, and peaches will be available this summer. One of the farm's specialties is their homemade Scottish Tayberry preserves. The Scottish Tayberry originated in the 1970's from crossing an American Blackberry with a Scottish Raspberry. Named after the Tay, a river in Scotland, the tayberry is as big as a blackberry, but deep red in appearance like a raspberry. Be sure to look for these preserves in late June. Please call special requests in Monday-Friday 9 a.m. until 3 p.m.

We have sold vegetables and small fruit at the Arlington Farmers' Market since its first year, 1980. It is a great market, always one of our best. Thank you for many years of support.
Our farm is in Loudoun county, Virginia, 10 miles North West of Leesburg. We own 65 acres and produce on 35 or 40 vegetables and a few small fruits. Nothing exotic --- Tomatoes, Squashes, Cucumbers, Eggplant, Beans, Okra, Melons --- but we grow a number of varieties of each and always choose for taste. We use ecological methods, such as organic and plastic mulches for weed control and moisture retention, beneficial predators and row covers to combat insects, green manures and lots of limestone for fertility. We irrigate with trickle tape from a pond.
Each season we hire 15-20 enthusiastic college-age people to live and work on the farm; you will meet them at the market offering vegetables they have planted, mulched, weeded, picked, packed (and cooked) themselves.
We use organic methods of pest control, a foliar spray made of food grade materials for supplementary plant nutrition, and add tons of mulch and limestone to improve soil quality.
At present we are making a plan for the long-term preservation of the farm. It foresees a few tightly clustered houses on one corner, with the bulk of the land left open, protected by a permanent conservation easement. As we do less farming, we plan to move into one of the cluster houses, leaving the main farm intact and rented to suitable tenants by a family trust or foundation. Our children, Charles and Nina, who put in many an hour selling at Arlington in the early years, are heavily involved in this planning and will have places on the preserved farm, too.
Your support at markets like the Arlington Farmers' Market has been indispensable to our success as full time farmers for 26 years. Again, thank you!
